Career Exploration

The seventh grade students completed their job brochures in the IMC this week. Excellent job! When they were finished they were able to use the Internet to explore various careers based on their own personal interests. Each student was able to complete a web quest using the Bureau of Labor Statistics' web page. The web site includes introductory career information. The occupations on the site are categorized according to interests and hobbies such as reading, nature, sports and helping people.
In the classroom we used our Food and Nutrition textbook to investigate careers in the field of Family and Consumer Science as well as Food and Nutrition. The seventh grade students were able to identify numerous vocations in these areas. I have included a link to the Labor Statistics website at the top of this page. Feel free to take a peek.
We also snuck in a quick measuring review and demonstration on Friday. Puppy Chow for all! Yummy!

Have a restful Spring Break.

Sincerely,
Mrs. J. Bretl

Are you a wise consumer?

We began our unit on "Consumer Skills" this week. We discussed the fact that middle school students spend thousands of dollars on food, clothes and entertainment every year. Students were able to identify a variety of resources that they can use to help them in making good decisions before they make a purchase. Students shared some examples of their own personal shopping experiences and determined that many were influenced by their peers, advertising and personal habits.

As a means of planning to earn some of their own spending money students were given an assignment to make their own job brochure. Students discussed qualifications, fees, work schedules and other important information needed on their job brochure. We will be working in the IMC next week to complete a final draft of the job brochure using the Publisher program. The students have done a nice job on their rough drafts.

Enjoy your weekend,

Sincerely,
Mrs. J. Bretl

Welcome Seventh Graders!

Dear Parents,

I am the Consumer Education teacher here at Lakeview Junior High School. This is my seventh year teaching Consumer Education. I graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and received my Master's degree and teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University. I am delighted to be teaching here at Lakeview.

Consumer Education is a Family and Consumer Science course designed to help middle school students learn the life skills they need to be responsible, productive family and community members.

The units of study for your seventh grader include:
Kitchen Safety and Sanitation
Food Preparation
Recipe Math
Nutrition and Health Concerns
Consumer Skills
Careers
Sewing Skills

Most of our coursework will be done in class. We will have very little homework due to the “hands-on” nature of our labs. Your child will use the textbook Discovering Food and Nutrition in class. If necessary, students may check out a textbook from me in order to make up work. I am available before school each morning and during study hall “A”.

There are many consumable materials used in this class. To help defer the cost of the consumable material, a $20.00 lab fee is necessary. Please pay the lab fee within the first week of class. Checks may be made payable to District 66. We prefer a check, but will accept cash. For cash payment, please put in an envelope with your child's name on it.

The lab fee due date is Monday, March 16th.

I am looking forward to an exciting trimester working with your child. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,
Mrs. J. Bretl

It is so hard to believe that we have started our last trimester for this school year! It has been great getting reaquainted with last year's 6th graders. It is fun seeing how they have grown and matured. They tell me they are ready to begin cooking. I told them that we will need to review a few things first. We will need to go over kitchen safety, measuring techniques, and equipment before we start our lab work. I know they will be able to make it.

Enjoy your weekend!

Time flies!

It has been a pleasure working with the sixth grade students this trimester. I look forward to seeing the 6th grade students again next year.

We accomplished many tasks this week despite our busy ISAT testing schedule. We covered our unit on The Basics of Babysitting. The sixth graders are quite interested in this unit. We discussed important safety information as well as information to gather before taking a babysitting job. The students did a great job brainstorming various facts they should consider before babysitting. They have figured out that it is a huge responsibility to watch small children. Several students have already started babysitting and were able to share their first-hand knowledge with classmates.

Enjoy your weekend.

Sincerely,
Mrs. J. Bretl
